    New compact Subwoofer

At ShowEast 2015, QSC introduced the latest in its line of compact, space-saving subwoofers. The new QSC SB-2180 subwoofer is the thinnest dual 18 inch subwoofer on the market.  Each driver is loaded into its own internal chamber. An ingenious folded port design minimizes cabinet depth, yet still provides full port volume.  The port also acts as internal bracing, creating a stiffer, less resonant cabinet. All of this allows the enclosure to be at least 20% thinner than any other dual 18” subwoofer you can buy, occupying up to 40% less floor space in your theatre.  In a multi-theatre complex, that extra square footage translates into more revenue-generating seating or concession space.  And, you can stack four on a shipping pallet, significantly reducing freight costs. “Conventional thinking says that subwoofers must be large, refrigerator-sized enclosures,” says Barry…

Traditional AV Designs and Networked AV Designs

”AV/IT Convergence” is a popular phrase right now. There is no question that it’s happening, but it’s important to know where we are in the process. Sometimes it feels as though IT folks view those of us in the AV industry as the newly born, already annoying baby brother. We were excited to be born into the IT world, but we are still struggling to learn how to speak, get around, communicate, and play in this space. Here’s how you, together with QSC, can adapt and grow… There are two schools of thought in the AV world right now: traditional and network-based AV systems. There is a time and a place for each type of system…for now. We must accept that a network-based AV system is more representative of the future than that of a traditional system—especially if our industry wants to grow into a mature member of the IT family. Here are the differences between the two…

    It’s More Than the Network

Let’s be honest, there are a million ways one could describe AV and IT integration.  It’s true that in this day and age, we can now control just about every device via the network, make our phone calls via the network, and route our audio and video using the network (and only a few projects thus far truly accomplish all three).  So what does “AV/IT convergence really mean?  Most answers will land around IT infrastructure simply meaning “the network”. Truth is, that’s not at all what it means. It’s so much more than the network. So, let’s start with a definition—the way IT defines it. The term IT infrastructure is defined in a standard called Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) v3 which is a combined set of hardware, software, networks, facilities, systems, etc. (including all of the information technology), in order to develop, test, deliver,…

    QSC in World's First Cinema

QSC Cinema products are installed in the recently refurbished Eden Theatre in La Ciotat, France.  The Eden Theatre is an historic landmark where the Lumière brothers screened one of their first moving pictures in 1896 - "The Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat Station (L'Arrivée d'un train en gare de La Ciotat)". In fact, legend has it that the audience were so terrified by the moving images of the steam locomotive that some of them leapt from their seats to flee the train. And this was 30 years before sound on film!    Today, the theatre is refitted with state-of the-art digital projection and sound, including QSC cinema loudspeakers and power amplifiers.  The July/August edition of Theatre World includes a feature article on the entire project.

Q-SYS Takes Badminton at a Gallop

Event communications company Show Hire made use of a QSC Q-SYS audio networking system at this year’s Badminton Horse Trials, sponsored by Mitsubishi Motors. Based around a Core 500i processor, a PS-1600 paging station, and several I/O Frames, the Q-SYS installation, supplied by UK distributor Shure Distribution UK, was used to route and control public-address audio around the 1500-acre site. "We've handled the public address at Badminton for a few years," explains Show Hire Events Manager Ross Slaughter, "and, until this year, we've always used analogue equipment, distributing audio signals using copper cable. Following our successful installation of Q-SYS at last year's Farnborough International Airshow, we thought we could bring the audio at Badminton into the digital age as well." Software

    Firmware Updates

Important Reminder: Update firmware on DPA Series amplifiers and Q-SYS Cores DPA and DPA-Q Series amplifiers are a revolutionary advancement in amplifier technology.  As with any software-controlled electronics, it is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you regularly check for the latest version software and firmware.  This will ensure that you have access to the latest features and that any “bugs” or other operational irregularities are resolved before they become problematic.   For DPA Series Amplifiers There are two software tools for updating DPA amplifiers: Amplifier Navigator and Amp Restore Utility.  Amplifier Navigator updates the amplifier’s firmware to the current firmware version and preserves all user-defined presets (50 in total). Amp Restore Utility will restore the firmware image to factory default.  That means all user-defined presets (50 in total) are…
